Superiority comparison of wood chip and wood pellet

When considering the different biomass boiler heating systems, how to select different kinds of wooden biomass fuel? The following are the advantages of wood chip and wood pellet produced by wood pellet mill.

wood chips and wood pellet

Wood chip biomass fuel
Wood chip refers the small pieces of wood, which is about 5mm to 50mm. It is better than the bough and sawdust. Since if the branch is too large, it will block the feed system of the boiler; if it is too small, it will make the combustion of boiler unstable. If the bark content is too high, the same situation would appear as well. Thus, these chips are need to be pretreated, depending on different materials, cutting tools, etc. In general, they would be processed by wood suppliers according to your demands for biomass fuels. In the production of wood fuel, trees and offcut materials are cut into chips and dried to make the moisture content meet the requirement.

Wood pellet biomass fuel
Wood pellet is made through the extrusion of sawdust or wood. Wood resin materials are processed into cylinders with the diameter of 6mm to 10mm and length of 10mm to 30mm. There are no artificial chemicals in the wood pellet, but sometimes it will add some starch or flour to improve the stability and make it become high density, low moisture content fuel to achieve the effect of easy transportation and storage.

There are a lot to be considered when choosing the fuel. It is critical to be clear about the system design, the installation of boiler and storage type of fuel. Through the transport and storage requirement, we can often predict what type of fuel should we choose.

Wood chip:
1. Cheaper;
2. Wide raw material sources (the reason for installing wood chip boiler is that there is cheap fuel in the native place);
3. The wood land can be managed and chipping by oneself;
4. May bring beneficial effects to the local economy.

Wood pellet:
1. Small storage space, easy transportation and storage;
2. Flow characteristics make it easier to delivery (by pipeline for long distances delivery);
3. Less moisture content, rare physical deformation;
4. Can be stored in bags, artificial feeding.

Other factors to consider
What is worth considering is that some of the biomass boilers can use both the wood pellet and wood chip fuel. However, certain wood pellet boiler can not use wood chip as fuel due to its narrow feeding spiral device. If you need to change the type of fuel, the boiler will need to be debugged again and change the Settings.
When deciding which kind of fuel is used, fuel storage and delivery are also important factors to be considered. If the storage space is limited, then wood pellet is more likely to be used.
Delivery frequency is the main factor in the design of system. The larger the delivery capacity, the cheaper the fuel. However, the volume of wood chip is relatively large. More fuel would be used in the operation of larger boiler, so the space volume and delivery time are need to be considered.
The delivery of wood chip is difficult than wood pellet because it has no mobility as wood pellet, thus lift trailer, container or other auxiliary tools are needed.
Wood pellet is usually delivered in bulk through the trailer or pipe. This is another factor of choosing the wood pellet fuel system.

When using the wood pellet mill in the production, users should pay attention to the operation of wood pellet mill and avoid excessive damage to equipment. In the operation of wood pellet mill, the roller presses the material into the die holes forcefully, while there is no smooth and auxiliary materials in this process, which would intensify the wear of the die...
