What materials can be used in the biomass pellet mill?
Shavings and sawdust, chips are the most common raw materials feed into pellet mill for a wood pellet plant to make pellet production.
However, Many other biomass materials can also be compressed into pellets such as miscanthus, alfalfa, straw, peanut shell, bagasse, bamboo,reed, hemp, switchgrass and other straws and grasses.
Before pellet compression in the biomass pellet mill taking place, wood, straw, grass and other biomass materials must be reduced in size, for the reason that only a raw material of consistent quality can produce consistent quality pellets. Too small or too large materials can severely affect pellet quality and increase energy consumption. The crushing of raw material is an important procedure when processing pellets with biomass pellet mill. The main purpose of crushing is to increase the exposure surface area of raw materials thus improving the combustion efficiency, the mixing performance of materials and the efficiency of granulation.
Moisture content of raw materials is also important in the whole process of pellet production. Higher moisture content of raw materials may result in higher moisture content in the final pellet moisture content. When the moisture content of the pellets extruded out of biomass pellet mill is higher than 15%, it will influence the pellet quality badly. Because the high moisture may rotten the pellets because of the decomposition of the batteries and fungus. When the moisture content of final pellets is lower than 5%, the pellet may easy be broken during friction caused in transportation and storage.
