Pellet market is growing in Italy

Recently, the report of Global Agricultural Information Network of USDA mentioned the Italy wood pellet market. It pointed out that 3400 thousand tons of wood pellets were consumed in Italy last year. The growth expectation of heating market and the Italian Renewable Energy Action Plan predicts that the use of wood pellets in Italy will reach 3300 thousand tons this year and 5 million tons in 2020.

According to the report, Italian pellets are mainly used for small-scale private residential and industrial boiler heating, which accounts for about 96% of Italian pellet consumption. The majority of pellets are delivered in bags. No more than 20 thousand tons of bulk pellets are delivered by silo trucks.
 
The report noted that domestic production can only meet 20% of the domestic demand, which reached only 350 thousand tons last year, another 80% of pellets requirements have to be met through imports. 
 
Last year, Italy imported 1340 thousand tons of pellets from Austria, 229435 tons from Canada and 179965 tons from America. It also import pellets from Germany, France, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Egypt and other countries.
 
Italy exported about 8271 tons of sawdust pellets last year mainly to Austria, Slovenia and Spain.

The wood pellet market in China is still in its infancy, and very little coherent information was found on current wood pellet production, consumption and markets. Pöyry (2011) reported that China was the biggest consumer of pellets by 2010, (around 600,000 tons).
