How to make wood pellets with wood pellet mill

A large quantity of raw materials, such as wood, corn, alfalfa, corn husks, straw, grass clippings, yard waste, forest and agricultural wastes can be made into fuel pellets with wood pellet mill. In the following content, we would introduce how to make wood pellets from wood with wood pellet mill. For other raw materials, the process is almost the same.

Raw Materials

In the pelletizing process, first we need to crush the wood into wood sawdust. Then, wood sawdust passes through the die of wood pellet mill and squeezed out with fixed diameter by the press roller. Then, sawdust is compressed into dense fuel pellets. The process from wood to fuel pellet can be divided into: crushing, transporting, drying, mixing and conditioning, pellet forming, screening, cooling, packaging and selling.

Crushing: to crush wood into sawdust. Wood should be crushed into small pieces before being processed in the die of wood pellet mill. While you can skip this step if you use sawdust as raw materials, which may further reduce the costs.
Transporting: to transport the sawdust to the dryer or wood pellet mill. There are several kinds of transportation mode: screw conveyor, conveyor belt and vacuum system. The most common way is the screw conveyer and conveyer belt.
Drying: the raw materials must be dry before pelletizing. The most suitable moisture content of wood pellet mill is between 10-18%. The appropriate moisture content of raw materials has great impact on the quality of the fuel pellets. If sawdust is used as the raw material with proper moisture, you can skip this step to reduce costs further.
Mixing and conditioning: to make fuel pellet with the same quality, the raw materials must be consistent. The operator should mix and condition different materials or add additives in order to improve the calorific value and reduce the amount of coking.
Pellet forming: sawdust passes through the die of wood pellet mill and squeezed out with fixed diameter by the press roller. Then, sawdust is compressed into dense fuel pellets.
Screening: There are inevitably some small pieces produced at the end of the production of wood pellet mill. These pieces must be seperated through the sieve to ensure the high quality and consistency of the finished product.
Cooling: the sawdust just squeezed out with fixed diameter by the press roller would produce heat and it is quite hot so that direct packing can not be carried out. The common method is natural cooling, sometimes air-cooled cooler is used for cooling as well.
Packing: the packing machine is used to pack fuel pellets in bags after cooling for easy transportation.
